Trip to the North Pole
"These are pics of our ice run to
rendezvous with the Nautilus after making their historic trip under the
Pole. We never saw or heard from them but it sure was an interesting
trip. After painting the boat white north of Iceland, we operated with
air craft around the ice flows, got trapped among them a couple times
(once with the Captain on the bridge), shot a torpedo at a big iceberg
without much effect, and saw the Northern Lights directly overhead on
the way south, before ending up at the Sub Base in Portsmouth Eng. We
caused quite a stir coming down the river.
The two guys standing together are,
left Pat Stenrich QM1 SS--right, Don "Mumchuck"
Devries TM1 SS. The smiling fellow in the black & white photo is
Gail Goins.
We left New London on 7/28/58 and tied up at the sub base in Portsmouth,
England on 8/23/58.
