Subject: How to get VA and other info for veterans

The following was received via Rod Friedmann

"Received via our USNA Class President, VADM Clexton, USN (Ret.).  Passed along fyi.

Here’s an email that some of you may want to save.  I received it from Pinkie Saunders, 3rd Co. I didn't try any of the web-sites for validity or delete any for Gulf War veterans or one for the homeless!

Ed

You may receive assistance in getting through the VA maze from the MHOP at the following web-sites:

http://www1.va.gov/vso/index.cfm?template=viewreport&Org_ID=84

http://www.purpleheart.org/
Below are  web-sites that provide info on Veterans benefits and how to file/ask for them. There are many sites that explain how to obtain books, military/medical records, information and how to appeal a denied claim with the VA. Please pass this information on to every Veteran you know. Nearly 100% of this information is free and available for all veterans, the only catch is: you have to ask for it, because they won't tell you about a specific benefit unless you ask for it. You need to know what questions to ask so the right doors open for you -- and then be ready to have an advocate who is willing to work with and for you, stay in the process, and press for your rights and your best interests.

Need a copy of your DD-214?

"Shipmates,

Recently, I was applying to the Veterans Administration inquiring on benefits.  Many of you probably have as well.  I could not find my original DD214  to copy, luckily i had a photostat.

Anyway, I did send a request in to the below address and got almost original copies of the DD214 .  I am sending this information incase you need do same. I received my copies within a month.  Include your Service number , which for us old timers is not the Social Security Number although they apparently linked up to it .

At the reunion in Saratoga (October 2006) a shipmate (sorry I forgot your name) gave me a printout of webpage that might be of interest to all shipmates. It's titled: "Veterans Holidays": This is "a leisure travel benefits program sponsored by Resort Condominiums International (RCI), a leader in vacation rental. Veterans Holidays is a "Space Available" program that offers honorably discharged veterans the opportunity fo take affordable condominium vacations at resorts around the world. For more information, go to their website at http://www.veteransholidays.com.

The following was received via the USSVI Groton Base newsletter. It was written by the base commander, John Carcioppolo. It was forwarded for insertion in the website on 11/11/03

World War Two Memorial

Perhaps you have heard about the World War Two Memorial being built in Washington DC. This Memorial will honor all Military Veterans of the war, and citizens on the home front. As part of this Memorial they are building a registry of any one who was involved with WWII. If you know any one whether they are family or friends, or yourself,  who served in any service during WWII you should ensure that they are registered. I just registered my father last week. It only takes a few minutes to do. Information on the Memorial, and Registration can be done at http://www.wwiimemorial.com

The following was received via Mike Martin in September 2003:

Cold War Certificate Program

In accordance with section 1084 of the Fiscal Year 1998 National Defense Authorization Act, the Secretary of Defense approved awarding Cold War Recognition Certificates to all members of the armed forces and qualified federal government civilian personnel who faithfully and honorably served the United States anytime during the Cold War era, which is defined as Sept. 2, 1945 to Dec. 26, 1991.

This is the only official site (https://coldwar.army.mil) on which to request Cold War Recognition Certificates.  This site is operated by the United States Army, the executive agency for the Cold War Recognition Program.  Cold War Recognition Certificates are available to qualified individuals at no cost.  Any other site offering these certificates or replicas for sale or purchase are not official sites and are not approved or endorsed by the US Army.

Due to the remarkable success of this program, turn-around time for mailing certificates will be a minimum of 6 months.  The CWRS Operations Team is working as fast as possible to clear the backlog.

Please do not request feedback prior to 6 months from the request date.

Thank you for your patience and interest in the Cold War Recognition program.

The following was provided from Stanley Altenhein in the first week of September 2002:

To U.S.S. Halfbeak Crew Members,

Please pass to all HANDS.

Stay well. Keep your eye on the Bubble!.

MEDAL FOR METTLE Are you a Korean War veteran? You may be eligible for a military decoration. In 1951, the Republic of Korea awarded this medal to Americans who fought in the war, but many honorees never received it because a federal law that wasn't revoked until 1954 prohibited military personnel from receiving decorations from foreign governments. To commemorate these unsung veterans, AARP is teaming up with the Department of Defense to identify men and women who are eligible and honor them at a ceremony on September 11 in San Diego. To get one, you must have participated in combat operations in Korea or in the surrounding waters for 34 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days between June 245, 1950, and July 27, 1953. For details, call the AARP Information Center at 619-641-7020 or go to www.aarp.org.
